Full Job Description

Join us in the fight for Britain’s waters. This is your chance to use your legal skills for something that truly matters – and potentially argue cases that shape environmental law for decades to come.

Outreach Officer

We’re looking for an experienced Outreach Officer to join our small (but mighty!) in-house team at Fish Legal. We use the law to fight polluters and to hold the government and regulators to account to protect the water environment in the UK.

You’ll work closely with our Head of Policy & Strategy and Head of Communications to expand Fish Legal’s reach within our membership and beyond. You will be in charge or organising and delivering outreach events and workshops and representing Fish Legal at public engagement events and forums.
This is a permanent, part-time, remote role that suits a committed team player with prior professional experience in outreach, a passion for community engagement and a keen interest in the water environment. Although the work can be demanding, we’re flexible and family-friendly.

What you’ll be doing

  • Plan, organise and deliver events with local, regional or national focus to drive membership.
  • Represent Fish Legal at forums, conferences and community meetings to promote its mission.
  • Develop outreach strategies to expand Fish Legal’s visibility and network within the angling and wider environmental community.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with key stakeholders to identify opportunities for outreach work.
  • Design and organise educational workshops for members and other stakeholders in collaboration with Fish Legal team members and the Angling Trust.
  • Work with our communications team to publicise outreach work.

Who you are

  • Holder of good A-Level or equivalent qualifications.
  • Professional experience in community outreach work, public engagement or membership development.
  • You have a proven ability to organise and deliver public or community events and to build strong, productive internal and external relationships in a work context.
  • Organisation and time management are some of your strengths alongside being adaptable and able to respond to changing priorities.
  • You know your way around platforms such as Microsoft Office 365 and SharePoint, your written and verbal communication is brilliant, and you’re committed to providing a high standard of member care.
  • You’re self-assured, confident, capable, and detail-oriented with sound judgement and a proactive attitude.

What will make you stand out

  • You have a passion for healthy waters and fisheries and an understanding of the role of angling within these.
  • You have experience working on environmental initiatives and/or within the not-for-profit or charity sector.
  • You hold a UK driving licence and you have access to a car.

What’s in it for you

  • Salary between £35,000 – £40,000 (pro-rata) dependent on experience, plus contributory pension.
  • Fully remote, with space available in our Leominster office.
  • Flexible working across 20 hours per week.
  • 25 days holiday (pro-rata, plus public holidays) later rising every year up to 28 days (pro-rata).
  • Laptop and mobile phone as well as any mileage or expenses.

Who we are

Fish Legal is a not-for-profit membership association which uses the law to promote and encourage the conservation and sustainable management of UK rivers, lakes, and other freshwater bodies, estuarine and coastal waters, and the role of angling within these. This is an exciting opportunity for you to join a very experienced team who are driven by mission rather than profit.

Want to join us?

We believe a diversity of backgrounds, experience, and opinions builds the strongest team, so we encourage those from under-represented groups to apply.
